Musk Injects Another $76 Million Into Final Midterm Push

A massive late-cycle cash infusion targets the Texas Senate race, positioning the billionaire as the largest individual donor in the election.

Elon Musk has poured over $76 million into his personal political committee, America PAC, during the first two weeks of October. This significant capital injection, reported in a pre-election filing submitted to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday evening, aims to bolster Republican candidates in the closing phase of the midterm elections.

The committee deployed nearly $43 million during that same two-week period. As the campaign enters its final stretch, America PAC retains a cash reserve of approximately $47 million, providing substantial resources for final advertising and outreach efforts.

The Texas Senate contest absorbed the lion's share of the new expenditure, drawing $15.2 million. This figure is double the amount the PAC allocated to the state throughout the summer. Of that total, $12.4 million was dedicated to attacking Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million supported Republican contender Ken Paxton.

Subsequent daily filings indicate an additional $9.1 million was spent against Talarico. This brings the PAC’s total spending against the Democrat to nearly $28 million this cycle, representing roughly 40 percent of all funds directed toward supporting or opposing candidates. The spending strategy has also shifted heavily toward digital platforms, with $11.4 million spent on online ads in the two-week window, a sum nearly equal to the combined spending on mail and text messaging.

According to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings, Musk has donated more than $445 million to Republican political groups during this election cycle. This places him as the most significant individual donor in the midterms. Of that total, more than $165 million has flowed into America PAC since July. The committee declined to offer comment on the new figures.

Musk, who operates major companies like Tesla and SpaceX out of Texas, has also amplified the race through social media. On Wednesday, he posted on X that something was “deeply wrong” with Talarico, labeling him “a creep” and claiming without evidence that the candidate would vote to remove children from parents for transition. Earlier in the month, Musk shared a false claim that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility. Talarico responded on the same day, stating that the system was flawed because it allowed one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator.

Despite the heavy spending, the Texas race remains competitive. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted from October 17 to 19, showed Talarico at 48 percent and Paxton at 46 percent. This narrow margin falls within the poll’s three-point error range, keeping the outcome uncertain.

The financial stakes for Musk extend beyond the Texas ballot. If Democrats secure the House, committee leaders have indicated they will investigate his involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency, his companies’ federal contracts, and what California Democrat Zoe Lofgren described as an “astounding” number of conflicts of interest. A unified Democratic Congress would likely pose even greater challenges.

Silicon Valley Democrats have added a new target to the list of potential investigations. On Friday, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House demanding scrutiny of SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. They vowed that the incoming Congress would closely examine federal funding awarded to Musk’s businesses, signaling continued political pressure regardless of the midterm results.
