Security Tightens for North Texas Congressman After Alleged Plot

A lawmaker says he is increasing his vigilance following federal action against a teen accused of planning a political attack.

A 17-year-old resident of McKinney is accused of plotting an assassination attempt against U.S. Representative Keith Self, a Republican currently running for a third term to represent Texas' third congressional district.

Federal authorities confirmed the teen was taken into custody by the FBI on Oct. 5. Campaign officials for Self said they were notified of the arrest through U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 6, roughly two weeks before the scheduled event. Investigators reportedly told the campaign that the individual had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring.

Authorities alleged the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The intended target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for Oct. 17, an event featuring former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI's Dallas office has not yet released a statement regarding the investigation.

In response to the intelligence, Self's campaign stated that the congressman increased his security awareness as early voting commenced across the state. Self noted that while he already maintained a security detail, the situation required a change in his 'situational awareness.'

The congressman attributed his measured reaction to his military background. 'Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you,' Self said.

Self added that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, understands the risks involved and is taking the threat seriously. Although the congressman has received threats in the past, he stated that 'nothing has risen to the level of an arrest,' distinguishing this incident from previous encounters.

Despite the alleged plot, Self reported that he attended the fundraiser as planned. 'I judged 19 different chilies and three different pots of beans,' he said, adding that the event was 'a delightful time' and that nothing occurred.

Campaign activities have continued without pause. Self stated he has continued to poll greet and meet voters daily, asserting that the incident will not deter his efforts to alert the public to what he describes as a specific political ideology.

The arrest occurs in the context of Self's recent legislative actions. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution opposing the implementation of Sharia law in the United States, asserting the Constitution remains supreme.

Tension surrounding religious institutions has also surfaced in the district. In August, the McKinney City Council voted to approve an expansion plan for a local mosque after hours of public comment, a decision that led to subsequent efforts by some residents to recall council members.

Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the upcoming midterm election, also posted a statement on social media condemning the alleged plot. The identity of the teenager has not been released publicly while the investigation continues.
